Saturday morning view from our wooden cabin. It rained (I think stormed of epic proportions, but I was asleep) Friday night, hence all the beautiful clouds and a fallen over dustbin.

We were fishing not far from this sign, but (I think) it was on a fence that applied to said private property...

But in reality, without awesome sky reflections, the water was more like this... also had big logs and debris floating in it on account of the massive storm, so fishing didn't really happen... Our status as fisherman/woman has yet to be proven

On our way out on Sunday we stopped by the Ale house where the owner brewed his own ale and made fantastic pizza (though we had to wait 2 hours for ours, which led us to drink a lot more ale than intended...)

I would definitely stay at Houtbosdorp again, mainly because it is so suitable for the budget traveler. The owners are really friendly and accommodating (albeit bad with directions, take GPS!). Just be prepared for quite a bit of dirt road getting there, and a communal bathroom and kitchen. There is also a chicken that starts making noise at 4am :D Of course for R150 pppn you can't expect a memory foam mattress, but all the basics are there.

Potjiekos is deeeelicious!

I may have just had the most relaxing Sunday ever. We made potjie and pot brood (bread made in a flat bottomed potjie pot) which I had never done before. It was wonderful! I loved it, not only did it turn out great (slow cooked for an hour and a half, the meat was falling apart), it was just nice hanging out with friends while you do a worthwhile activity together where alcohol wasn't the main focus (we did drink still, but we took it easy :D ).

Weekend drawing

I decided to not do any of the work (take home work from the office) I was supposed to do this weekend and did some drawing instead - weee! I haven't drawn is so long!

 First, a giant shedding monster who stalks you in the night...

Then some kawaii girls from egg magazine (I'm not sure where I got the March issue from, but you can look here - you get the idea, its Japanese kawaii culture on acid). I liked their poses.

Weekend activities

Shoe! Weekend was crammed full of stuff! I really had a great time though, because usually I freak out trying to please everyone, but this weekend I just did the things that I wanted to do and friends showed up :) and of course I made Alex make lamingtons with me late at night/early in the morning (yes it was so complex we had to split it into 2 parts) - note the beer in every lamington shot (on weekends we have beer for breakfast because we can). Also I went to my first proper wedding - hee! My boss Frank is married!

This is my recipe sheet in preparation for National Braai (barbeque) Day here in South Africa. I think it is a good time to raise our braaing skills - no more drunken munching on burnt boerewors and raw chicken for this girl! We will have a braai that is inclusive for all food groups! and marinade shall be used!

Dikhololo lessons : How to have a beer slushy

Left your beer in the freezer over night because you were impatient to make them cold but then got too drunk (after the first 2) to take the rest out? Never fear, as you have just created beer slushy!

Note: Beer slushies foam A LOT and never attempt to drink the foam as it has ice bits in it that you have to chew and its kind of gross - as Alex found out.

 Here's how to make your frozen beer edible and even enjoyable :

Step 1: Cut beer can open with a knife, try not to get can tin filings in it...

Step 2: Pour beer ice into a glass - preferably a non glass glass so you are covered should your motor functions be impaired later on because you are drinking in the sun...

Step 3: Find a tea spoon (normal spoons are too big, and the slushy will freeze your mouth off) and ingest!

Dikhololo holiday!

 We went away for the weekend to Dikhololo - by Brits. Hee such fun :)

We made our signature punch - which is now also known as diarrhea juice...

And we did lots of super tubing - after much experimentation we found out that if you lie down and twirl yourself like a vortex, you go super fast!
